But what about the dragons living in the overworld, which are not only a danger to small living creatures, but also are an excellent companion in a sense. So, Dragons Addon adds several dragons and also illagers who can summon them.

If you do not want to fight and are looking for a dragon to tame, then use the fish as a taming item. A tamed dragon is rideable and can wear armor that provides some degree of protection.
