Sorting items in Minecraft PE is a feasible task only using chests, but you will have to memorize each individual chest where a certain set of items are stored. The Better Storage addon adds 7 new boxes that store only one type of items and are marked with an icon.

They are not in creative inventory and therefore you will have to look for villages (the easiest way is to use any village seed) where the sellers reside. Find a crate seller and exchange a stack of carrots, bones, potatoes or other edible items with the box. The exchange is fair and can take place in the opposite direction.
By and large, these boxes are only a decoration, although with their help you can make food stocks.
