Today, developers have released Minecraft PE 1.2.13 that is not as massive as it might seem at first glance. In fact, this is quite an interesting version that fixes many annoying bugs, but the most important thing is the new block format.
Simultaneously with the announcement of the release of the new version, another unusual event occurred. Tommaso Checchi, lead developer of Minecraft Bedrock, has published a detailed description of what is happening and what will change in the blocks. And it's very unusual because the developers quite briefly described the changes in most cases.
After the partner servers appeared, the technical information was transferred to the partner servers, so that they could update their servers to release the new version of Minecraft. But this time Tommaso posted a link to the document in his tweet. This document describes how you should update your code to support the new block format.
The document describes the concept of the changes that have taken place and it is quite different from Minecraft Java. In Minecraft Bedrock 1.2.13 beta we can talk about two ways of representing a block type:
PersistendID is the block state ID that will include the block name and its variation.
RuntimeID is a working identifier that will be used to transmit block information during the game session.
Work on changing the format is not yet complete. Many questions still do not have answers so developers will gladly share new information closer to completing the work.
