Minecraft Bedrock 26 has been officially announced! Mojang has confirmed that update 26.10 will be released next year, and they also made it clear there will be no 1.22. So, we're now switching to the new update numbering system starting with this version.
Minecraft had a confusing versioning system for a long time. Since 2011, the numbers grew gradually: 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, and so on, until they reached 1.21. But then Mojang switched from updates to game drops, and to emphasize the difference, instead of 1.22 "Garden Awakens," they started calling it 1.21.50 on Bedrock and 1.21.4 on Java. The numbers kept growing until they reached pretty awkward values such as 1.21.130 and so on.
To fix this, Mojang decided to switch to a version system based on the year. Starting in 2026:
Thus, the first drop of 2026 will be 26.1 on Java and 26.10 on Bedrock.

The next major drop in spring 2026 will be called:
This is similar to Spring to Life, but nothing is known about it yet, except that it's definetly not Bedrock Edition 1.22. The new system looks unusual, but it becomes clearer after explanation.
Mojang believes that the new system will help mod and add-on authors, allow them to discuss future drops before the name is announced, and eliminate confusion between hotfixes and content releases. However, there will now be no room for major annual updates. All releases are called the same thing - "game drops".
Despite a complete overhaul of the system, Java and Bedrock are not synchronized. For example, 25.70 on Bedrock would correspond to 25.4 on Java, not 25.7. This remains one of the main problms.
