While crawling, your height is physically reduced to one block, allowing you to crawl through 1x1 holes. The prone crawl works with slabs; you can actually crawl under the half block into a 0.5x1 hole. Interactions with blocks and items remain in effect while crawling.
Aesthetic animations are these two. Now you can lie down or sit by simply looking up or down and tapping the sneak button. While prone you are reduced to 0.5 blocks, sitting down to 1. This works great with stairs and beds to make it look like you're sitting or sleeping.
